The truth about mini pigs
The question everyone has asked... Does a micro or teacup pig truly exist?
Simple. NO!
There is no such thing as a micro or teacup pig. They are only terms used to sell the piglets. These terms include but aren't limited to
Teacup
Nano
Pixie
Micro
Dandie
Micro mini
Pocket
Let me say first, mini isn't a breed of pig. Mini is a term used to describe a pig smaller than farm hogs. Just because your piglet gets 250lbs doesn't mean it still isn't considered a mini because it actually is. Mini pigs can be anywhere from 45lbs to 300lbs. With the terms above, most people will say their piglets don't get but 15-30lbs full grown which is crap!! But it is believed by so many people. Anyone claiming that is nothing but a GREEDER!
I'm so tired of seeing posts claiming tiny pigs when in fact they aren't! Most people are selling them at just a few days old to make the buyer assume they will stay small. Which in my opinion is very sad and just plain wrong! I have said it once and I'll gladly say it again, DO YOUR RESEARCH!!!
It's not hard, it's actually pretty simple.
Do your research on mini pigs before getting one, DO NOT buy impulsively! I repeat DO NOT BUY IMPULSIVELY!
That's how so many pigs end up in shelters or sold just as quickly as they were bought. They outgrow the said weight from the seller, owners buy without doing research to only be disappointed because it's not what they thought it would be like, etc. I could go on and on with reasons.
Doing your research helps you figure out if a pig is the right pet for you and it also helps you understand what to look for before buying, so you don't buy an underage pig or sick one or a farm hog. Only you can take the measurements to not get scammed.
Below are some pictures of piglets. Notice how tiny they are? That's because they are NEWBORNS! Maybe a few hours old. Greeders (people only out for money) will advertise these kind of pictures to trick you into thinking they will stay small.
These babies below were around 3weeks old in the pictures, major difference in size and appearance.
The piglets pictured below were around 7-8weeks old before going to their homes
And this boy, Winston, almost a year and half old. No he's not fully grown, as pigs don't stop growing until 3-5 years of age.
And this is, Petunia, almost a year and half old.Again she's not fully grown, as pigs don't stop growing until 3-5 years of age.
If the babies look like the first few pictures, don't buy them as they shouldn't be away from the mother and are not WEANED!
If someone is advertising for bottle babies, I don't encourage you to buy them. If you do, please do your RESEARCH as it's not recommended to bottle feed a piglet as they can aspirate and die. Pan feeding them is best. Leaving them with their mother is better.
And please don't believe people when they say bottle feeding helps with them bonding to you, that's just a lie used so they can sell them!
Here's a few red flags in random posts I have seen
Saying they will only get 35lbs or so... They are probably closer to 60-70lbs.
Again around 40lbs... doubt it. Remember pigs aren't fully grown until 3-5years of age
Will only get about 15lbs... He's still a baby so he has a lot growing to do
Again 35lbs? See a pattern yet? These people don't mention the parents age at all?
Don't think so... Never believe this lie. Only way a mini pig will "max out" at 30lbs is if it's starved!
This one is different. They mention the height but no way that dad is full grown... he's probably not even a year old yet.
Yeah sorry I'd need proof for both of them. On a scale with a date beside them in the picture along with proof of age. If it's true you have an EXTREMELY RARE pig!!
There's 2 flags in this post... Can you guess them? The parents weights and the option of bottle feeding... That's just giving the piglets a countdown on their life especially selling to anyone with money who probably has never owned or researched a pig.
And lastly, the old line "if you get them earlier than weaning they will bond so much better with you!"... Truth is pigs are prey animals so now matter if you get them at a few hours old or 8weeks old they will still be scared with the change of environment. Just at 8weeks gives them a better chance of survival.
